(Picture Above) The picture above shows the rocks near the water are affected by chemical weathering. We can tell that Chemical weathering occurred because we can see the little holes on the rock. This shows us that a new substance was formed onto the rock.

The weathering of rocks by chemicals is called chemical weathering. Sometimes rainwater is naturally acidic because it contains carbon dioxide. This is caused when fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas are burned, carbon dioxide escape into the worlds atmosphere. Carbon dioxide then dissolves into the water in the clouds and makes rainwater more acidic than usual. This is called acid rain. When rocks are exposed to the rain, the minerals in the rock react with the rainwater. Limestone and Chalk are examples of rocks that are easily weathered. These rocks are easily weathered because they contain a mineral called calcium carbonate. When rocks are weathered, new substances are formed in the reaction. Building and statues made out of rocks are often damaged if they are made out of rock.
